Heavy metal bands and symbolism

Category: General thingsEmiel Kollof @ 20:17

You see it time after time in the news. Some metal band gets accused of being fascists and propagating Nazi ideas and similar stupid stuff. And of course the people from that band prepare a statement that they have nothing to do with this. Of course, it’s all very silly.

The thing is, the bands that get accused with nazism are usually bands that have pagan backgrounds or have pagan influences. The symbols they use might resemble some that the Germans might have used during WWII, and which some extreme right wing groups are still using. Does that make those symbols bad? No.

Of course, there is a group of people that take offense at anything that doesn’t resemble Christian symbolism. Fundamentalist Christians bitch at anything that isn’t Christian, or that attacks their world view. Inverted versions of their symbols are sure to arouse their wrath, and anything that even remotely resembles a cross (but isn’t) is also scoffed at. You see, those people equate anything that isn’t Christian with Evil and their version of Satan. Shortsighted? Yes. Annoying? Sure.

So. If you hear of yet another band that is being accused of fascist or extreme right-wing views, ignore it. It’s just Christian anti-propaganda at work.

Putty for the N97 mini

Category: General thingsEmiel Kollof @ 13:28

As some of you know, I have recently aquired a Nokia N97, and I am loving it. But I ran into a little snag when trying to install putty for Symbian on it with the Touch UI. Namely, the certificate seemed to be expired. I fixed it by using sign4ever to sign it myself.

Sign4ever is here: http://www.applicationsnokian97.com/how-to-solve-expired-certificate-in-nokia-n97/

I think you people can figure it out, the process is fairly simple. Have fun!

My handpainted Baphomet wallcloth

Category: General things, SatanismEmiel Kollof @ 11:52

My lovely wife went to town with her sowingmachine. It’s the same cloth/banner we used for our wedding ritual. Great to see it hanging on the wall in a proper way :)

R.I.P. Tank

Category: General thingsEmiel Kollof @ 16:51

05082008187.jpgOne of my cats died today. My wife discovered his lifeless body on the floor in the living room. I didn’t look as if he suffered in any way. So we guess it might have been heart faillure.

Tank, I will miss you man. It was fun while we had you around. Too bad you had to leave the party that is life.

Rest in peace.

The siege on Teylingen castle

Category: General things, ReenactmentEmiel Kollof @ 18:03

Last weekend I was re-enacting with my group at the ruin of Teylingen near Leiden. It was a fun weekend, and I even got to do some battle. I had to use a sword, since axes were prohibited.

Me and my hatchetAnd I do love my axe, as shown in the picure here. But since I am not completely useless with a sword, I borrowed one from one of my groupmates and that was that. It was my first re-enactment battle, and I fared quite well. Didn’t get to make many kills, but I managed to not die and even uninjured. Guess I am handy with deflecting blows with my targe (shield) as well. The pike-men did scare me a little bit, since I wasn’t wearing any leg-protection, and there were so many of them, but that didn’t deter me from marching past the pikes and getting in a few hits here and there. Since I combat in a spar, the way was clear for my spar-mates as well, and they got in a few hits as well. It was nice to see how combat in a spar works in practice. People reacted kinda weird at this mini-line of three men came marching at them, and anyone that dared to come at us had to combat something that is difficult to outflank. The hardest thing about working in a spar is keeping the spar together and working as one unit. Breaking off and going solo is very tempting, but also very dangerous. You need to stay together at all times, and protect your gallowglass at all costs, even your life. Fun fun fun :)

battleWe did the siege two times, one time early in the afternoon, and later in the afternoon. The second siege was more eventful, since more people got hurt. I was luckily not one of them, but I saw a lot of bad stuff happen. Guess one should not go into battle when one is tired. No lethalities though, but some chipped teeth, some sprained ankles and some bruises were not uncommon. But that’s a risk you take when you enter the battlefield, you might get hurt. If you don’t accept that, you should not enter.

But the whole experience was fun. I learned quite a bit from my fellow combatants, and the whole siege thing was well executed by the organizers, “De Companie van Cranenburgh”. Many kudos to them for taking good care of us out there.

Reenactment is cool.

Category: General things, ReenactmentEmiel Kollof @ 09:01

reenactmentThere you are, minding your own business while sharpening your axe. Suddenly someone runs into your village and proclaims the Sassenach are coming. You stop sharpening your axe and you report directly to your Gallowglass master. He is busy getting dressed in his chain mail and doublet, while some other Cairn is fetching his weapons. After some more Cairns show up, we set off, armed to the teeth. I, Seamus, grip my axe tight. Willing to die for my master.

Of course this is fictional. But this weekend I’m playing a 14th century wayward Irishman, that ended up with Angus Og in the Scottish Isles as part of a dowry, since his wife is Irish. Fun fun fun.

Software is overpriced.

Category: General things, TechnologyEmiel Kollof @ 09:52

overpricedDo you know what a copy of Photoshop costs? Or what you have to pay for MS Office, or even for MS Windows? Most people don’t much notice the latter two, since they usually get bundled when they receive their machine from work, and the OS usually gets bundled with new PC’s, which hides the cost, but it is still being paid.

This is a very old model. and one that business thrived on for many years. But now, the game has changed. Nowadays, there are very low cost and free alternatives available. So why is software still so expensive? It’s like they are begging to be pirated. With low-cost software, it’s less of an issue.

To make this more glaringly obvious, let’s look at the prices of some popular products from some popular companies.

A good example is MS Office. Everyone knows it, and it’s one of the most pirated software around. If you buy MS Office legally, it will set you back round €500. There is another product out there called OpenOffice, which has the same functionality, but a way better price, namely free. It’s not the only example out there. A lot of commercial software is horribly overpriced. Similar comparisons can be made with MS Windows vs. Linux, Photoshop vs. GIMP or Krita Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape.

So, there are cheap and free alternatievs available for all that commercial stuff. Sure, the commercial apps may be a lot better, but people usually don’t have unlimited budgets. If companies want to be able to market their software a lot wider, they should seriously drop the prices by a lot. Or maybe give the software away for free for personal use, but charge for support. I’m not saying open sourcing it, because that may be impossible because of licensing agreements between companies.

Some companies use unfair tactics, like Microsoft. They strong-arm OEMs to bundle their OS with the hardware the OEM sells. Even if you don’t want that stuff from Redmond, you are stuck with it. Sure, you can remove it and run something else, but you still paid for it. A copy of Windows Vista Home Premium will set you back about €215 if you buy it from the store. Okay, the OEMs probably get it for a somewhat lower price, but it is not far off. Do you want to pay for something you might not use?

I would have less of a problem with this if the OS was dirt-cheap (like maybe €20  or somesuch), but alas.  But thankfully there are alternatives. It doesn’t take away that software is needlessly expensive, and if companies want to survive in this day and age, they should get off their damn high horse and tone the costs down quite a bit.

And don’t get me started on availability of commercial software if you order it online. Maybe that’s a different blog-post.

Irish friends, please vote NO for me again!

Category: General thingsEmiel Kollof @ 18:46

Once again, the european parlement doesn’t want to listen to us, and tries to force that piece of shite called the Lisbon treaty down our throat. They come with promises they can’t back up, and they just try to let Ireland vote again. This is of course horseshit. Please Irish citizens, let our voices be heard too, and let them wipe their damn arses with that rag that is called the Lisbon treaty. It’s just the European constitution, which they tried to force down our throats before.

Don’t fall for it, Ireland. Vote no for us again, since we were not given a voice.

Lig dóibh a ghlacadh go conradh a dhéanamh agus iad a chur suas a n-anas!
