Got a new server

So, Richard came by yesterday evening to drop the server off (thanks dude). It's an IBM eServer 336 8873, with one 3.6 Ghz Xeon, 4 GB of RAM and 2x72 GB disks. Nice box. It's kinda noisy though. So I was sitting in the noise later to install Solaris 10 on the thing, which runs beautifully on it by the way. But the noise is bugging me. So, if anyone knows of a nice solution to quiet that thing down a notch (or two), I'm open for suggestions. Preferably without impairing the machine by too much.

Anyways, I also looked at the power consumption, which is okay for home use. It won't drive my electric bills up too much.

Another option is to rack it somewhere. Who has got a place to spare for a 1u machine and a spare IP number? For not all too much money please. :)

Are you sure? A conservative

Are you sure? A conservative estimate of power costs comes to about 600 euros a year.

The PSU (I only use one, I

The PSU (I only use one, I took the other one out) is specced to ~580 Watts. The machine, when idling and not under heavy load will probably not eat up that much, so the costs would be okay. But I am probably considering moving it to some rack somewhere remote since the damn thing is very noisy.

I assumed 280 watts average

I assumed 280 watts average load to get to that 600 figure

Which is round 50

Which is round 50 euros/month. Hm, colocating it looks cheaper. I probably get better connectivity at some colo place. Know any good cheap ones?

Habbie suggested coloclue.net. I signed up. Looks like a fun place.
